The Ancient House Museum in Thetford is a historic building that brings to life the history of the town and the surrounding region, known as the Brecks. The museum is located in a Tudor house built around 1490, making it a significant example of architecture from that time.

Collections and Exhibits

The museum houses a diverse collection covering various aspects of local history:

Tudor Hall: The main chamber of the house, furnished around 1595, reflects the life and domestic culture of the Tudor period. The walls are adorned with typical red and yellow tapestries, and portraits from the 16th and 17th centuries decorate the walls.

Collection Room: This room is filled with treasures from the museum's collections, displayed in pull-out drawers. Visitors can discover a variety of artifacts illustrating the history of Thetford and its surroundings.

1901 Kitchen: The kitchen is set up to reflect life in 1901 when the building was occupied by Thomas Newton, a rabbit catcher, and his family. It includes a working coal stove, a copper kettle for heating water, and a laundry press.

Residents' Room: This room explores the lives of four former residents of the house: a publican, a plumber, a watchmaker, and a museum attendant. Visitors can learn more about the different professions and ways of life in the region.

History Room: The two upper rooms were originally used as living and sleeping quarters. The first room, known as "History Highlights," is equipped with archaeological finds and memorabilia illustrating Thetford's rich history from prehistoric times to the 1960s.

An impressive 360° tour of this exhibit is available online, allowing visitors to explore the exhibits virtually.

A must visit for anybody who's in or around Thetford and likes history. Some parts of the house are really well preserved dating back to the 1400's, with a large focus on the history of Maharaja Duleep Singh. Probably only takes an hour to see and read everything, think I was there 30-45 minutes.

I adored this museum -particularly the Indian/Punjabi connection as this house was gifted to the townspeople of Thetford by the son of Maharaja Duleep Singh His life story is actually interesting enough to fill one museum on it's own, so his adoring fans will definitely find something to like about this… There are rooms full of nostalgia of bygone local eras and also a current exhibition about the Vikings. Maharaja duleep singh last prince of punjab. Great place (but a small one - 1hr max) for all ages. lovely staff. Here's a top tip : the day price is £6, after 4pm of the day, it's only £2

Really good artefacts, displays and information. Especially liked the "timeline" display showing artefacts of each age, excellent for comparison. Also liked the kitchen as it was the same as the house we moved into in 1954!! Very friendly staff too.

Absolutely stunning, ancient house. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The building is beautifully restored and has so much atmosphere, I personally find it very calm and relaxing. Prices are very reasonable for what it is. It's a very important part of history for the local area and, the staff have a passion for the house that is very infectious. Of all the places to visit in Thetford, I would honestly recommend this.

I saw one of the reviews said 'compact' and that's certainly what the Ancient House Museum in Thetford is. Upon entry there is a member of staff who is happy to take the money and then allow you into the house, there's sometimes actors who perform some of the duties back in the early Tudor days. For me personally, it's not a place I'd visit again, it's more of a "been there, done that" the information is a bit all over the place and it's in dire need of being renovated since there is a lot of areas in the house that have been damaged through the years of customers walking past this house.
